The House of Wine and Food is a distinctive foodie destination in Melbourne. How many restaurants can actually claim that? Often there can be a sameness about Melbourne dining experiences – many cafe menus are mirrors of each other and even restaurants serving up similar dishes. But for the discerning diner, The House of Wine and Food is a unique and exciting dining experience in Melbourne bringing French, Italian and Mediterranean classics and compelling bar and dining spaces.

Bouillabaisse is France’s classic Mediterranean fisherman’s stew and Alan Giles cooks it to perfection on a Saturday night or all day Sunday. Alan cooks it in front of you and with so much passion and care. The place is charming, as are the owners Alan and Deb.

Tucked away in the quiet residential streets of Port Melbourne, The House of Wine & Food is a hidden gem offering an authentic Mediterranean dining experience. Don’t let it’s old school pub exterior fool you, what was once the Cricketers Arms Hotel, has now been transformed by new Owner and chef, Alan Giles, into a warm and inviting venue where the food and wine shine.

“A HOTELIER is bringing the port of Marseilles to Port Melbourne with his mouth-watering bouillabaisse. After buying the Cricketer’s Arms hotel last year, husband and wife team Alan and Deb Giles have transformed the beloved pub into the House of Wine and Food and are serving up an array of traditionally prepared French and Italian fare.”

“Tucked away in a quiet street in Port Melbourne, this beautiful building was once home to The Cricketer’s Arms Hotel. Carefully refurbished over a six-month period, The House of Wine and Food emerged as a force majeure. Having kept all of its old-world charm and character, I was in love with the feel of the place. Walking in, there was no way to tell that it once used to be a typical Aussie sports bar and pub.”

“If there’s one thing we love, it’s someone taking the time to preserve and give new life to one of our historic pubs, and that’s just what’s happened at The House of Wine and Food. The iconic Cricketers Arms Hotel in Port Melbourne is now a modern, French inspired haven with local historic charm.”

“Port Melbourne is a trendy area in Melbourne and this pub didn’t disappoint. We were greeted by the owner upon arrival who made us very welcome. The hotel has had a complete restoration and is very tastefully decorated. The food has many French classics and was delicious. The crumbed sardines and fish pie were outstanding . Next time we go back I will try the bouillabaisse. The owners are a delight to speak to and very knowledgeable on wines.”

“Visited House of Wine and Food and was blown away! Warm welcome coming through the doors, decor is absolutely stunning, each area has a different feel, a lovely relaxed beer garden, exceptional service and delicious foods.
What more can I say about service? First class service all the way! Food, must try the oysters with the raspberry vinaigrette. Absolutely mouthwatering delicious! Had the lamb cutlet and was cooked perfectly. If I need to fault anything, sides to the lamb was a little bland however sauces with the cutlet put the flavour back in. Relaxed atmosphere and was happy to spend my whole day here! With many wines to choose from! This place is ideal for after work drinks, dinner, lunch, family gathering, work gathering, any occasion. This place is perfect! Look forward to my next visit.

This has been a trusted local for over 20 years for us, good food and atmosphere. Now it has been transformed into a gastro pub and we were concerned, but what a transformation!! The decor is significantly better and the beer garden still great. Although it was previously beer first and maybe a meal. Now the focus is on food first ( and good wine). Yes the prices have risen but so they should. They are up maybe 10-20% but the quality is up 200%, also the size of the meals are very generous.
Last night I had the weiner snitzel and it was one of the best meals I have ever eaten, I think $32? My wife had lamb cutlets that were cooked to perfection. It should be noted that the meals come complete ( mine had perfect gratin potatoes, a dob of spinach and mixed roasted peppers), so no need for all those extras that are the norm with most restaurants these days. The service is also first class. We look forward to returning.”

“It’s a classy place to have a classy meal. It was so good we started lunch at 1pm and finished at 6pm. Staff were very friendly, service was great and a fantastic wine list. Well worth the visit.”

“Once you walk through the gorgeous hallway through the period style home, past the wine bar, you a greeted with a beautiful provincial style court-yard. Francois aka Frankie was a wonderful host. Service was attentive, food was authentic, timely and delicious. Definitely will be back to this hidden little gem.”

“What an absolutely delightful surprise it is walking into what used to be a dingy pub and feeling like you’re walking into a Mediterranean terrace! The food, wine, service and hospitality was perfect from start to finish and I can definitely see us spending our afternoons into nights here! Highly recommend! Another stellar venue for Port!”

“This is an absolutely delightful dining oasis in the back streets of Port Melbourne. We are so excited to find that the old Cricketers Arms has had a new lease on life. New owners have given the venue a comfortable, classy makeover. The food was simple, very well cooked and delicious. We are baby boomers and appreciated the easy listening soft background music and good service. We will definitely be back !!!”
